I wrote this after hearing details of a court case in which a father who angry with his son  for not doing what he was told. Tied him up and beat him for a whole day then finally he cut the child with a bushfire across the belly. Only then was the father satisfied and the mother was allowed to approach the child and rush him to the hospital but it was too late.

During this time the mother watched in terror. Fear of her husband overriding all maternal instincts. I as a mother I can only imagine what was going through her mind, body and soul during and afterwards.

I am not an angel.  I work everyday to stop my habit formed by what my culture has brought me up to believe that using the rod to discpline the child is good for the child.  I will keep trying for as long as I live.

In the name of discipline

From curtain rod holders,

a six-year old swings,

On a chair a policeman sits,

shaking his head in disbelief,

He moves away to stop the itch,

to untie the baby hanging from two strings,

sand-filled buckets weighing down his feet,

bruises covering every inch,

ribs jutting out through his skin,

The neighbor says, “I had to ring,

when the child was nowhere to be seen

don’t know where his daddy’s been.”

Cop walks out taking his momma in,

She explains, “he always been a difficult kid,

so I was only giving him some discipline.”

Hero maker

Here they stand,

In perfect stance,

Their presence magnificent,

One purpose,

One focus,

No room for mistakes,

Few will fail,

Others will bail,

Most will walk the trail,

In their hands,

lies their country’s fate,

Here heros are made.

The sea breeze whispers as it sweeps by,

The sun tiptoes across the skyline,

Orange streaks shoot out across the sky,

The sea slaps on beach as if to say hi,

Coconut leaves rustle greeting as I walk by,

A red stained smile makes my heart jump in reply,

Tears run down rheumy eyes,

“You came,” he whispers in this beautiful language of mine,

Wonderful shaky old calloused hands reach out,

They hold my hands and trace nose, mouth and eyes,

The scent of sea, wood smoke and freshly cut wood swirl together deliciously,

All around birds, children, insects and people speak,

No jarring noise just blending perfectly,

Sago thatched roofs bring back memories,

Black palm walls achingly familiar,

White coral crunches as I sit,

Small, hard leathery palms touch and squeeze my feet,

And wipe away my tears,

As she whispers softly,

“I knew you would come back to me.”

This poem came about one day when I was homesick. I sat for ages yearning to go home.

I yearn for home but there is nothing there for me so I guess town is where I will live and die.

DON’T GIVE IN

DON’T GIVE IN

As we strive for our dreams,

Along the way assholes we meet,

Trample them with your feet,

Then stomp on them as you leave,

Don’t let people destroy your dreams,

Cause in the end its all we can give,

As we believe our children will learn to live,

Don’t give in, dream, live,

When you stumble and fall

Don’t stay down too long,

Pick yourself up and say,

okay so I was wrong,

But tomorrow I will give it my all,

So the next time you and the asshole meet,

You can grin and say eat shit,

Cause me I have loved and lived,

No more do I live in fear,

I refuse to wallow in misery,

You have not got the better of me,

You were just a piece of shit,

I was unfortunate enough to meet.

AN ANGEL WAITS

An angel awaits

I swear I hear you say my name,

My arms weak from hug less days,

 nothingness fills this place,

silence claws chunks of me away,

mentally stuck on replay,

heart swollen with ache,

Heaven I can taste,

For my angel waits.

I wrote this after seeing a photo in one of Papua New Guinean‘s daily newspaper of a grandmother leaning over her dying grandchild. They had been in a car accident along the Madang -Ramu highway and she was waiting for help that took too long. She ended up calling relatives to drive down from Lae and pick them up. Sadly the dash for the hospital came a bit late as the child died.

Alone

In my dreams I disappear,

and no one sheds a tear.

iyabara©2010

I wrote this after  reading an article in the National Newpaper about unclaimed bodies in the Port Moresby General Hospital and a mass burial was organised for the bodies. I know it could be for a lot of reasons. But it made me wonder about how it would feel.
